When the Amsterdam newspaper broke the news that England’s Queen Charlotte’s first two sons were fathered by the French Ambassador and not King George III, the French King had Maurice de la Tour's painting of le Chevalier d’Eon as a woman...painted years earlier as a potential cover for his spy mission to Russia...pulled out. Shipped to London for prominent display, it is currently in the British Museum. You have to ask to see it. (When last at the British Museum, I asked to see it. The curator asked how long I would be in London. It said 2 more days. He said it would take 3 days to get it out of storage to show). This is that story.
